81.6 QUARTZ VEIN WASH JUST EAST OF POWDER DUMP WASH

This is a sandy 4WD road negotiable for about 0.4 mile. This wash, like the Narrows Earth Trail behind and Nude Wash ahead, displays prominent fault gouging as solid rock has been pulverized into a powdery mass. This is a very complex area where the Aguanga-San Felipe fault zone encounters region-wide detachment faulting of incredible proportions. This wash has many large ironwood trees that provide sheltered camping spots. Hike up-canyon and follow it to the right past many pegmatite dikes with black tourmaline (schorl). The ridge to the north separates Quartz Vein Wash from Powder Dump Wash.

As the highway swings to the left into the Narrows, note the large, light-colored pegmatite dikes on the north side.
